Carolina TV News covers local news, sports and weather in the Columbia, South Carolina area, including serving communities in Richland, Lexington, Kershaw, Saluda, Newberry, Orangeburg and Sumter counties. The news content on this digital site is created by upper-level journalism students at the University of South Carolina.  The senior capstone TV experience is a special course in which aspiring reporters, anchors, and social content creators produce live daily newscasts. Professional journalists help train and oversee enterprise story gathering and creation.

 

 

Rick Peterson is a veteran of 30 years in the television news business and has taught in USC’s broadcast Senior Semester for two decades. He continues to work as a story producer for the national news desk at NBC News in Charlotte, selecting nationally breaking stories for use around the country. Students know he understands how a newsroom works and what a national news story looks like.

Chris Halsne is an award-winning investigative journalist with over 30 years of experience in local television. Honors include the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award, multiple National Press Club awards, and a national Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting. Known for combining traditional storytelling with data analysis, Halsne produces impactful content across all formats: digital news, TV investigations, documentary film, podcasts and streaming services.
